Case closed: Managing High Moisture Levels in Extreme Mining Conditions

Deadline: 27 March

Codelco faces major challenges at altitudes of 3500–4200 meters above sea level at the Andina Mine in Chile, where extreme weather conditions greatly increase moisture levels in the ore. During winter, up to 11 meters of snow fall, leading to moisture levels that are manageable up to 10%. However, anything beyond this creates significant operational issues, with peaks of up to 22% moisture during severe winter storms.

The excessive moisture leads to equipment blockages, unplanned downtime, and disruptions in production. Codelco is seeking innovative solutions to manage this extreme moisture and ensure continuous, smooth mining operations, particularly during harsh weather conditions.

The goal is simple: manage high moisture levels to ensure continuous, efficient mining operations despite extreme weather.
