About us

The strategic innovation programme Swedish Mining innovation is part of a joint investment in strategic innovation areas (SIP) by Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency.

Swedish Mining Innovation’s vision

A world leading mining and mineral producing industry contributing to a sustainable society.

In answer to societal challenges

The focus on strategic innovation areas aims at creating opportunities for international competitiveness and sustainable solutions to global societal challenges, such as access to raw materials and a sustainable commodity production. Actors in academia, industry and other organisations collaborate within the programme, and anyone who wishes to contribute to the overall aim and objectives of the programme are invited to submit applications for financing.

Strong industry and a sustainable extraction of metals

The aim of Swedish Mining Innovation is to strengthen the competitiveness of the Swedish mining and metal extraction industry. This is achieved by promoting leading centres and clusters for research, innovation and education where sustainable solutions for the extraction of metals are developed. The Swedish mining and metal extraction industry is already at the forefront when it comes to sustainability and efficiency in exploration, extraction and refinement. To continually improve the competitiveness, and research and innovation agenda has been developed. All activities within Swedish Mining Innovation aim to realize the visions of the agenda.

Activities

The programme office uses four different activities to reach the visions of the agenda:

  • Outreach, communication and internationalisation
  • Innovation projects
  • Meetings and workshops
  • Education

Projects

Calls for innovation project proposals are opened regularly. The proposed projects should contribute to a more sustainable and competitive Swedish mining and metal producing industry, for instance through technical advancements. The projects that are funded can be pre-studies, full-scale projects or pilot projects. In addition, the programme office may initiate individual projects in areas of particular interest. Project applications are evaluated by an external assessment team. This leaves a recommendation to Swedish Mining Innovation’s Board, which, after a thematic review, leaves a decision to Vinnova. After that, Vinnova takes the formal decision on which projects are granted and administrates them.

Education

To improve the availability of competent personnel in Sweden, a graduate school is planned within the auspices of Swedish Mining Innovation. The graduate school will be open to all PhD students active in any of the focus areas of Swedish Mining Innovation.

Symposiums and meetings

Swedish Mining Innovation arranges several seminars and meetings each year. Some of these are primarily intended to inform and facilitate communication between different projects and project members. Other meetings invite anyone interested in the research and innovation undertaken within the program. Learn more about upcoming events in the calendar.

Internationalisation

A part of the work of the programme office is focused at monitoring events in the European research context. It is, for instance, possible to apply for travel grants to participate in Horizon 2020. Eligible to apply are small and medium-sized enterprises, non-governmental organisations, universities, university colleges and government agencies in Sweden.
